Rugs to Riches

The stories of finding hidden treasures at garage sales have tantalized most women and haunted most men for years. Women love “Garage Sailing” (defined as: a combination of going to a sale and setting sail for good deals in a car all day. Go ahead webster’s better get this added.)

Men typically hate “Garage Sailing”. But the closing technique used by most women is the often told (but never actually verified) story they read about a random couple long ago who had set sail one weekend to find that perfect garage sale deal and went home with an original Picasso or Monet  valued at $50 million dollars that they traded some old socket wrenches for.

Basically the closing line goes a little something like this, “Honey I understand you want to stay home and watch sports, nap and pass gas – but if you don’t join me on this adventure it could cost you $50 million dollars.” That is enough to get any guy off the couch.

Once the adventuresome duo sets out it is clear that the word GARAGE and GARBAGE are closely linked and probably not by accident. There is a toaster for 25 cents. It doesn’t work, but has a really nice 3 prong cord and clearly the cord is worth 25 cents – better take that home. Then someone spots some bit of nostalgia that tally up another few scheckles to the day’s financial investment. However, not unlike the Picasso story there has been more than one tale of finding antique area rugs which are handmade of wool and silk blends that date back more than 100 years ago.

These rugs are not commonly sold at garage sales, but when they are it can be an amazing opportunity to find something totally unique. Today of course there is no need to put on an adventure spirit to find really cool area rugs. Rugs today are so affordable and so well made it is easier to skip the garage sale experience and let the guy sleep on the couch and let the gal go get a makeover because you did your rug shopping online.

You can get incredible values online by rug shopping especially on the weekends. The online rug stores are very busy Monday through Friday. This is because people do their personal shopping at work, which is an entirely different blog entry. However, on the weekend most places have limited or no staff, but to maintain sales momentum they often will put coupons or weekend only offers to entice buyers to make the purchase online without sales staff assistance. This save everybody money. So rather than chasing the fantasy of finding the perfect rug or for that matter an original Picasso why not shop for your area rugs online and save yourself both time and money. Going from Rugs to Riches is easier than you think!
